Things that will kill or harm bacteria:-
We have lots of bacteria forming in our sewerage treatment plant, it is therefore very important to be careful not to put any of the following down the drains:
• Motor oil, grease, anti-freeze, brake fluid.  • Weed killer, insecticide, fungicide and other garden chemicals.  • Medicines- all should be taken to nearest pharmacy for safe disposal.  • Paint, thinners, white spirit, turpentine, creosote etc.  • Photographic developing fluids.  • Large quantities of bleach.  • Large quantities of washing detergent.

It must be noted that small quantities of bleach and detergent won’t have a huge impact on the ecosystem in the tank. It is also advisable to spread the use of bleach and detergents over a number of days rather than having one full cleaning day every week.

Things that will overload the tank biologically:-
To some degree, waste is broken down in a sewerage system and adding to the waste is not conducive to good bacterial growth. The following items and substances should not be put down the drains:
• Cooking oil and fat  • Food waste  • Pet waste

Adding food (which hasn’t been broken down by a human first) could be the equivalent of adding another 4-5 peoples waste into your system. Also, as food breaks down it can smell rather pungent. Similarly , the waste from a dog is similar in volume to the waste of a human so be sure to dispose of that waste properly.
